Safety in Numbers

Moving into an assisted living community seems like a large sacrifice for some seniors, many view it as giving up the freedom and independence that they love so dearly.  Though a change from living at home to living in a community may result in a few sacrifices, it also has some tremendous benefits that can more than offset any sacrifice made.

Many seniors, even some who are in reasonably good health, can have a bit of difficulty getting around or getting up from a seat.  If a senior who were living on his or her own stumbled or lost their balance at home and a fall resulted, they could conceivably be laying injured for several hours without any help.  In an assisted living community the odds are good that either a staff member or another resident would either witness or hear the incident as it happened and be able to provide immediate help which could minimize the potential damage.  Speedy response can be critical in the event of a fall and in an assisted living community where there is constantly medical staff around, the chances are very good that not only fast, but immediate treatment can be administered.

Assisted living communities are also properly furnished to make getting around easier; wheelchairs, walkers and canes are readily available and the floors of rooms and hallways are kept free of clutter by staff.  Residents don’t have to worry about house cleaning for safety purposes, spills are handled immediately and obstacles are kept to a minimum.

Your elderly loved ones may not want to sacrifice the freedom or comforts of home, but as getting around becomes more difficult the overall safety that comes with an assisted living community is very difficult to match at home and safety can result in a longer and happier life.
